growing up, the pretzel was always the pariah of snacks. the lowest caste. you only ate pretzels if all else was gone. the hierarchy of snacks went something like this:
Doritos (Nacho Cheese. this was before the days of Nacho Cheesier)
Pringles (Sour Cream & Onion or BBQ)
Crunchers potato chips (BBQ. i don't think they make these anymore)
Lays potato chips (BBQ)
Ruffles (Sour Cream & Cheddar)
Fritos (chili cheese)
Sunchips (French Onion)
Fritos (original)
Tostitos (original. always eaten with medium Pace picante sauce)
popcorn (often with Parmesan cheese on it)
various types of crackers- Ritz or Townhouse being preferable
pretzels
when everything else ran out, we could always count on there being an old already opened (though closed up) bag of pretzels somewhere deep in the recesses of the pantry. i think we only ate them because we HAD to eat SOMETHING while we watched Reading Rainbow and then Star Trek TNG after school.
as an adult, i find that i still don't really LOVE pretzels, though once in awhile they do satisfy in a way that few other snacks can - they are salty, filling (in the right quantities) and almost always fat-free. and they go very well with beer. i also hear rumors about a new M&M with a pretzel in it. maybe the pretzel is moving on up in the world? we'll have to wait to see which way the crumbs fall...
